Riverside Letters

The two Geng Nings

Two people named Geng Ning lived in the riverside town. The grandfather was a watchmaker, and his grandson was still at school. People called the grandfather Old Geng and the grandson Little Ning.

Lan brought parts for repairing watches every day. She always wore a blue scarf and spoke softly, but never talked about her past.

“The same name does not mean the same fate,” said his grandfather. Little Ning wrote this sentence in his notebook.

Example discussion

Why give grandfather and grandson the same name?

The text establishes their shared name, then has the grandfather say that a shared name need not mean a shared fate. It distinguishes the people while leaving their lives open to comparison.

One interpretationThe shared name may contrast inheritance with personal choice. This passage alone cannot establish the author’s entire intention.

Is it only for fiction?

Bring literature, history, philosophy, social science or professional books. Use character relationships for stories, and discuss concepts and arguments in nonfiction, organizing your understanding with notes and mind maps.

Will it reveal later events?

The default scope follows your reading position. You choose when to include a whole chapter or book. Characters, relationships and citations follow that scope too. AI interpretations can still be wrong; check important claims against the text.

Which book formats work?

EPUB and PDF files up to 50 MB. Scanned PDFs can be read immediately; discussing their text requires OCR. Your uploaded books and reading records are stored privately in your account.

Does using AI cost anything?
